About Sacred Heart Chapel

A legacy of faith, art, and community at Kenosee Lake

A Legacy of Faith at Kenosee Lake

Sacred Heart Chapel holds a special place in the spiritual landscape of southeastern Saskatchewan. As part of the Estevan Deanery within the Archdiocese of Regina, the chapel has faithfully served the Catholic community of Kenosee Lake and the surrounding region for decades.

What makes Sacred Heart Chapel truly unique is its setting and its congregation. Kenosee Lake is a resort village — a community that swells with visitors during the warm summer months and settles into a quieter, close-knit rhythm through the long Saskatchewan winters. The chapel reflects this duality: a place of vibrant summer worship welcoming vacationers and cottagers, and a steadfast spiritual home for the year-round residents who form its faithful core.

Located at 53 Hiawatha Street, the chapel sits within the heart of the village, just minutes from the shores of the lake and the trails of Moose Mountain Provincial Park. It is a place where the beauty of creation meets the beauty of faith — where parishioners gather not only for worship but for fellowship, mutual support, and the shared celebration of God's gifts.

Father Joe Frey and Sacred Art

Father Joe Frey — Artist & Shepherd

Father Joe Frey is one of the most beloved figures in the history of Sacred Heart Chapel. A priest and gifted artist, Father Frey moved to Kenosee Lake in 1995 and quickly became an integral part of the community.

In 2005, Father Frey undertook a remarkable project: painting the 14 Stations of the Cross for the chapel. What made this work extraordinary was his decision to incorporate the faces and likenesses of actual parishioners from the Kenosee Lake area into each station. The result is a deeply personal and profoundly moving series of paintings that connects the ancient story of Christ's Passion to the living community of Sacred Heart.

Father Frey's artwork continues to adorn the walls of the chapel, making Sacred Heart a unique destination where sacred art and community identity are beautifully intertwined. Visitors and parishioners alike are moved by the experience of seeing familiar faces within these sacred scenes.
